MLB Roundup: Devers Extends HR Streak to Six as Red Sox Shut Out Rays

In Monday night’s series-opening 5-0 Boston win against the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla., Rafael Devers tied a franchise record for the most games with a home run for the Red Sox. The Red Sox took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning when Rafael Devers smashed a two-run home run off a four-seam fastball from Taj Bradley (1-2) that was 97 mph. His streak of six consecutive games with a home run was broken, breaking Bobby Dalbec’s record from 2020.

Boston starter Tanner Houck (4-5) threw 94 pitches over seven innings to stifle the Rays, allowing only two hits while striking out five and issuing one walk due to a defensive alignment violation. Yandy Diaz, Josh Lowe, and Jose Caballero each singled as the Rays were shut out for the second time this season. Despite striking out a season-high 10 batters without a walk, Bradley allowed five runs on six hits over seven innings.

Mariners 5, Yankees 4

Ty France hit a tiebreaking RBI single to cap a four-run ninth inning off Clay Holmes as Seattle rallied to defeat host New York. The Mariners ended the Yankees’ seven-game winning streak by scoring four times off Holmes (1-1), who blew his second save in 15 chances and allowed earned runs for the first time this season.

Eduard Bazardo (1-0) conceded an RBI single to Jon Berti that extended the Yankees’ lead to 4-1 in the eighth but earned the win as Seattle triumphed for the fifth time in its last eight games.

Marlins 3, Brewers 2 (10 innings)

Josh Bell hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning as host Miami edged Milwaukee. Otto Lopez’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth sent the game into extra innings. Tanner Scott (4-4) earned the win.

The Brewers’ bullpen had to pitch most of the game, as starter Joe Ross exited after one inning due to a low back strain. The first five Milwaukee relievers combined for seven scoreless innings. However, Trevor Megill blew a save in the ninth, and Mitch White (1-1) took the loss.

Blue Jays 9, White Sox 3

Danny Jansen went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and five RBIs, while Daulton Varsho added a two-run homer as Toronto defeated visiting Chicago. Bo Bichette went 4-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI for the Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series. Toronto right-hander Jose Berrios (5-3) allowed three runs on eight hits over six-plus innings.

Paul DeJong went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and an RBI single for the White Sox, who have lost four straight. Nicky Lopez also went 3-for-4. Chicago right-hander Erick Fedde (4-1) allowed five runs on seven hits in six innings.

Guardians 3, Mets 1

David Fry drove in two runs and scored another as host Cleveland defeated New York for its fourth straight win. Fry delivered a two-run single in the first inning and scored on rookie Kyle Manzardo’s fourth-inning double. Cleveland starter Ben Lively (3-2) allowed one run and struck out seven over 5 2/3 innings, yielding a third-inning home run to Tomas Nido and five other hits without issuing a walk. Emmanuel Clase picked up his 14th save.

Tylor Megill (0-2) returned from a shoulder issue sustained in his season debut on March 31 to pitch five solid innings for New York, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out seven.
