Ghana Names Otto Addo as Head Coach After Disastrous AFCON Campaign
Ghana’s football association has announced the re-appointment of Otto Addo (48) as the new head coach following the departure of Chris Hughton (65) after the team’s disappointing early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast earlier this year. Addo, who previously led Ghana at the World Cup in Qatar, will officially assume the role in May but will oversee friendly matches against Nigeria and Uganda in Morocco this month.
Having served as a talent scout for Borussia Dortmund while coaching in Qatar, Addo will now transition to leading the national team on a full-time basis after being released from his contract by the German club. His appointment follows a thorough selection process, during which Addo impressed the Ghana Football Association with his vision and capabilities.

Addo first took charge of Ghana in February 2022 after the dismissal of Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac. Although Ghana secured a victory over South Korea at the World Cup under his guidance, they failed to advance past the group stage. Despite the challenges, Addo expressed gratitude for the opportunity and is eager to embark on his new role with the national team.
With a focus on revitalizing Ghana’s 2026 World Cup qualification campaign, Addo aims to guide the team to success in upcoming qualifiers against Mali and Central African Republic. Following a mixed start to the qualifiers, with a win against Madagascar and a loss to Comoros, Addo is determined to steer Ghana back on track for World Cup qualification.
The appointment of Addo signals a fresh start for Ghanaian football, with hopes high for a resurgence under his leadership as they strive for success on the international stage.
