Danish Superliga Wins Legal Battle Against European Super League’s Trademark Registration Attempt

The Danish Superliga secured a significant victory on Wednesday as it won a lawsuit against the European Super League (ESL), preventing the latter from registering “Super League” as a trademark in the European Union. This ruling effectively prohibits any future European Super League from claiming exclusive rights to the name “Super League” within the EU.

The dispute arose when the European Super League Company S.L. sought to register their trademark in the EU. However, the Danish Superliga, jointly owned by Danish football clubs, objected to this move, arguing that it would infringe upon their existing trademark rights.

In a statement released by the Danish Superliga, CEO Claus Thomsen expressed satisfaction with the ruling, stating, “We are very happy that the EU’s trademark authority has agreed that the trademark ‘THE SUPER LEAGUE’ in the EU will violate the value that the Danish clubs have invested in 3F Superliga.”

The decision by the EU’s trademark authority underscores the importance of protecting the intellectual property rights of established entities like the Danish Superliga. By disallowing the registration of “Super League” as a trademark, the ruling safeguards the integrity and brand identity of the Danish league.

Although the European Super League, with the assistance of sports development company A22, has the option to appeal the decision, the initial outcome represents a significant setback for their trademark registration efforts in the EU.

This legal victory for the Danish Superliga not only protects its interests but also sends a strong message to other entities seeking to exploit the “Super League” brand name without due consideration for existing trademarks and intellectual property rights.

As the legal battle continues, the outcome will have implications not only for the Danish Superliga and the European Super League but also for the broader landscape of football governance and intellectual property protection in the EU.
