Haas Evaluates Rising Talent Bearman; Ferrari Takes Cautious Approach with Sainz
The performance of British teenager Oliver Bearman during his standout debut with Ferrari has drawn significant attention, sparking speculation about his potential full-time entry into Formula 1 next season. Haas team boss Ayao Komatsu praised Bearman as “a total package,” particularly impressed by his performance as a stand-in for Carlos Sainz, who underwent surgery for appendicitis.
As Bearman stepped into the Ferrari for final practice and qualifying in Jeddah, delivering a remarkable 11th-place qualifying result followed by a seventh-place finish in the race, discussions regarding his future in Formula 1 intensified. Haas, aligned with Ferrari through a cooperation agreement, is seen as a potential destination for the talented youngster, with whom they share services as a reserve driver.
Komatsu expressed his satisfaction with Bearman’s performance, emphasizing the impression he made during previous FP1 sessions in Mexico and Abu Dhabi. The team boss highlighted Bearman’s exceptional talent, describing him as “impressive” and acknowledging his potential contribution to Haas.
While Haas celebrated their first point of the season with Nico Hulkenberg finishing 10th, Komatsu regarded Bearman’s achievement as equally significant. Despite Hulkenberg and teammate Kevin Magnussen being out of contract at the end of the season, Bearman’s standout performance has fueled discussions about his potential future role within the team.
Bearman himself expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of joining Haas full-time, emphasizing his desire to establish a strong relationship with the team and gain more track time. Describing his performance as a potential “job interview,” Bearman remains focused on making a lasting impression in Formula 1.
However, Bearman’s commitments extend beyond Formula 1, as he also competes in Formula 2. Despite missing the Jeddah round, Bearman holds pole position for the feature race, although he has yet to score points. With Barbadian driver Zane Maloney leading the standings, Bearman’s attention remains divided between his commitments in Formula 1 and Formula 2.
Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur emphasized the importance of prioritizing Bearman’s Formula 2 campaign for the remainder of the season. While the possibility of a second Formula 1 outing in Melbourne remains uncertain, it hinges on Sainz’s recovery. Vasseur indicated that a decision regarding Bearman’s participation in Melbourne will be made closer to the event, underscoring the team’s confidence in Bearman as a reserve driver.
Meanwhile, Sainz’s recovery from surgery continues, with hopes of his return to the cockpit in Australia. Despite his determination to race, Sainz’s previous experience highlights the unpredictability of recovery timelines. Vasseur recalled Sainz’s struggles during a previous race weekend, underscoring the challenges of competing while battling illness.
As the Formula 1 season progresses, Bearman’s performance has undoubtedly raised eyebrows across the paddock, positioning him as a rising star to watch. With his talent and potential evident, Bearman’s journey in Formula 1 unfolds amidst speculation and anticipation about his future endeavors.
