Elena Rybakina Withdraws from Indian Wells Due to Illness

Defending champion Elena Rybakina (24) has regrettably pulled out of the Indian Wells tournament prior to her scheduled first match due to illness, tournament organizers announced on Friday.

Expressing her disappointment, Rybakina stated, “It is with great sadness I must announce that I will not be able to participate in this year’s Indian Wells tournament due to gastrointestinal issues.”

She continued, “Those close to me know how much this tournament means to me and how eagerly I wanted to return to defend my title. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the fans who came out to support me, and I apologize that they will not have the opportunity to see me play this year.”

Rybakina emphasized her commitment to recovery, saying, “Now, I will focus on resting and recuperating so that I can return to the court and compete at my best for my fans once again.”

The Russian-born Kazakhstani player, currently ranked world number four, boasts an impressive track record, including a Wimbledon victory in 2022.

As a result of Rybakina’s withdrawal, lucky loser Kayla Day from the United States has been granted entry into the singles draw.

Rybakina’s absence adds to the list of late withdrawals from the tournament, which includes 2021 champion Paula Badosa, who withdrew on Thursday due to an ongoing back injury.

Furthermore, three-time champion Rafael Nadal also withdrew from the competition on Wednesday, just before his scheduled first-round match, citing his readiness to compete at the highest levels.
