Orlovsky: Patriots should focus on drafting a QB similar to CJ Stroud
Former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky has weighed in on the New England Patriots’ potential draft strategy, suggesting they target a quarterback similar to CJ Stroud. Orlovsky shared his insights on the Next Pats Podcast, hosted by Phil Perry and Tom E. Curran, discussing the options available to the Patriots in the upcoming draft.
Orlovsky highlighted USC’s Caleb Williams, UNC’s Drake Maye, and LSU’s Jayden Daniels as the top quarterback prospects in the class. While Williams is expected to be the first quarterback off the board, Orlovsky believes the Patriots may have to choose between Maye and Daniels with the third overall pick if they prioritize selecting a signal-caller.
Despite Maye and Daniels’ talents, Orlovsky expressed a preference for Daniels based on his observations during the 2022 season. He recalled instances when there were concerns about Daniels’ hesitancy and lack of trust, but noted his impressive growth and mental toughness throughout the season. Orlovsky sees potential in Daniels’ skill set, likening it to that of Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud.

Orlovsky emphasized Daniels’ proficiency as a pocket passer, drawing parallels to Stroud’s smooth throwing motion and ability to deliver accurate passes. He praised Daniels for his pure passing ability and suggested that he excels in making a variety of throws from the pocket.
In addition to discussing quarterback prospects, Orlovsky touched on the possibility of the Patriots selecting Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. if they choose to pass on a quarterback at No. 3. Harrison Jr. is considered a generational talent at the wide receiver position and could provide a significant boost to New England’s offense.
The episode also featured insights from former NFL quarterback Matt Ryan, who shared his expectations for the Shanahan offense and its benefits for young quarterbacks. Ryan emphasized the importance of timing and trust within the system, highlighting the challenges and rewards for quarterbacks operating within it.
Orlovsky further discussed the Patriots’ new offensive scheme under Alex Van Pelt, describing it as a “cheat code” for young quarterbacks. He weighed in on the decision to retain Mac Jones, making a case for the Patriots to keep the young quarterback amidst their potential draft considerations.
With the 2024 NFL draft set to begin on April 25th, the Patriots face critical decisions that could shape the future of their franchise. Orlovsky’s insights offer valuable perspective on the team’s draft strategy and the potential impact of their selections on their offensive capabilities moving forward.
