Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham’s manager, stated that the club cannot focus only on winning trophies after 16 years; instead, they must develop a team that can consistently win competitions.
Spurs fans haven’t been able to enjoy winning a trophy since the 2008 League Cup, but they’ve been very near a few times recently—the team advanced to the Champions League final in 2019 and the League Cup finals in 2015 and 2021.
In the 2016–17 Premier League season, they also came in second.
“At a club like this, I don’t believe winning one trophy should be the ultimate goal,” Postecoglou stated in a press briefing ahead of their FA Cup clash with Burnley on Friday. “The focus should be on building a team and a club that contends for trophies every season.
“There shouldn’t be an obsession with winning a trophy as a cure-all – because it isn’t. Once you secure one, what do you think the fans will demand? ‘It’s alright… you can go without winning for another 15 or 16 years?’ No. They’ll demand more.”

“I’ve got real pictures. Quite a few. I just look at the ones I have,” said Postecoglou, who has won championships in Australia, Scotland, and Japan, when asked if he imagined himself hoisting trophies at Spurs.
“My motivation comes from winning. Every year, I begin with the hope that by the conclusion, I will be seen with my team winning a trophy.”
