D.R. AFCON: Congo eliminates Egypt in a thrilling penalty shootout

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains on track for their first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in half a century after securing a thrilling penalty shootout victory against Egypt. Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi emerged as an unexpected hero, propelling DRC into the quarter-finals following a 1-1 draw.

Early in the match, the Pharaohs missed significant opportunities to take the lead, with Ahmed Hegazy heading over from Marwan Attia’s cross, and Mostafa Mohamed failing to capitalize on a promising position in the box. On the contrary, DRC’s best chance in the initial stages came when Théo Bongonda found space but missed the target from close range near the penalty spot.

The 1974 champions signaled their intent, taking a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when Meschack Elia headed the ball into the net from Yoane Wissa’s deflected cross. However, their advantage was short-lived, as Rui Vitória’s team equalized before halftime. A VAR review led to a controversial penalty awarded against Dylan Batubinsika for a trailing arm on Hegazy, and Mohamed successfully converted the spot-kick, marking his fourth goal in as many games in the tournament.

Despite their opponents having the momentum as they entered halftime, DR Congo appeared more likely to emerge as victors after the break.
