American skier Mikaela Shiffrin, aged 28, secured her 95th career victory, extending her own record, by winning the World Cup women’s slalom in Jasna, Slovakia, on Sunday. Shiffrin established a significant lead in her opening run, resulting in a combined time of one minute 48.21 seconds. This performance earned her the 150th World Cup podium, bringing her within five podiums of the record held by Ingemar Stenmark. Additionally, Shiffrin’s 82nd World Cup slalom podium broke her tie with Stenmark for the most podium finishes in a single discipline.

Shiffrin’s victory was achieved by a narrow margin of 0.14 seconds over 19-year-old Croatian skier Zrinka Ljutic, with Anna Swenn Larsson claiming the third spot. In a finish-line interview, Shiffrin acknowledged the support from the Slovakian crowd and expressed her awareness of Ljutic’s excellent performance, stating, “I could hear you cheering for Zrinka, which was actually quite cool from the start to hear this noise. I knew she put down an amazing run, and I had to push.”

Mikaela Shiffrin, who recently broke Ingemar Stenmark’s all-time record with 87 victories, secured another win in the World Cup women’s slalom in Jasna, Slovakia, a day after Petra Vlhova suffered a season-ending injury. Expressing the absence of Vlhova, Shiffrin acknowledged the challenge on the second run, noting a decrease in energy.

Vlhova, a dominant force in women’s slalom alongside Shiffrin, tore knee ligaments in a crash during the giant slalom on Saturday. The duo has collectively claimed 14 wins in the past 15 slalom races.

Shiffrin commented on Vlhova’s injury, saying, “I have been thinking about (Vlhova) a lot the last 24 hours. Honestly, this is just an enormous blow for the sport. It sucks. For me personally, over these years, I’ve grown to love the battles with her, and I think today she would be just so strong, so I really miss watching her ski today and having that battle.”

Shiffrin is currently positioned to secure her eighth World Cup season title in slalom.
