Speed skating’s 1000-meter American record is broken by Jordan Stolz
On Sunday, 19-year-old speed skater Jordan Stolz achieved a remarkable feat by breaking a 15-year-old American record in the 1000m. At the Four Continents Championships held at the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns, Stolz clocked an impressive time of 1 minute, 6.27 seconds. Notably, this record-breaking performance occurred at altitude, where many records are typically set.
Stolz’s new record surpasses the previous mark of 1:06.42 set by two-time Olympic gold medalist Shani Davis in 2009. With this achievement, Stolz now holds the fourth position on the all-time list, following Russian Pavel Kulizhnikov (1:05.69) and Dutch skaters Kjeld Nuis (1:06.18) and Thomas Krol (1:06.25).
Having improved his personal best by two tenths of a second, Stolz has previously lowered the American record in the 500m during each of the two preceding seasons, showcasing his consistent excellence in speed skating.
In October of the previous year, Jordan Stolz achieved the distinction of skating the world’s two fastest sea-level 1500m times in history. His exceptional performance in the 1500m event resulted in a personal best time of 1:42.26, ranking him fifth in American history for that event. The top positions are held by Shani Davis (1:41.04), Joey Mantia (1:41.15), Chad Hedrick (1:42.14), and Brian Hansen (1:42.16).
In the previous season, Stolz made history by becoming the youngest skater to secure a world title. Furthermore, he achieved the remarkable feat of winning three individual gold medals at a single world championships, establishing himself as a rising star in the sport.
Looking ahead, the Utah Olympic Oval is set to host a World Cup next weekend, providing another opportunity for records to be challenged. Live coverage of the event will be broadcasted on Peacock.
