The champion of the US Open is off to a great start at the Melbourne Major
In the opening round of the 2024 Australian Open Grand Slam, 19-year-old Coco Gauff faced little resistance from Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmidlova. The match concluded swiftly in just one hour and one minute. Gauff secured the first set with a score of 6-3, followed by a dominant 6-0 victory in the second set.
This marks Gauff’s fourth appearance in the second round of the Australian Open in her career. Her previous best performances in Melbourne were reaching the fourth round in both 2020 and 2023. Gauff, seeded fourth in the tournament, is set to face another American, Caroline Dolehide, in the next round.
It’s worth noting that Gauff had defeated the 93rd-ranked player in the world at the beginning of the 2024 Australian Open.
