Sabalenka Stays Positive Despite Madrid Open Final Loss to Swiatek
Despite falling short in the Madrid Open final to Iga Swiatek (22), Aryna Sabalenka (26) chooses to focus on the positives from her performance.
Sabalenka, who lost a thrilling encounter 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(7), had entered the tournament struggling for form. Following her Australian Open title defense in January, she managed just four wins in four tournaments.
However, a resurgent Sabalenka impressed in Madrid, defeating former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina and Miami Open winner Danielle Collins before pushing Swiatek to the limit in the final.
“I’m happy with my level and the effort I gave this week,” Sabalenka shared with reporters. “There are a lot of positives to take away from this tournament, and I’m leaving Madrid feeling good.”
Sabalenka acknowledged her post-Australian Open struggles. “It was tough for a few months,” she admitted. “Finding my rhythm again was challenging. But I’m thrilled to have rediscovered my form here in Madrid. I believe things can only get better from here.”
Looking ahead, Sabalenka sets her sights on the Italian Open in Rome. “First things first – pasta!” the Belarusian exclaimed. “Rome is one of my favorite tournaments. The facilities are beautiful, and it’s a gorgeous city. I love Rome and can’t wait to be back.”
