Coco Gauff, aged 19, is determined not to be labeled as a ‘one-slam wonder.’ Despite her victory over Aryna Sabalenka (25) at last year’s Flushing Meadows final boosting her confidence for the Australian Open, she emphasizes that she doesn’t dwell on the past. The American, currently ranked fourth in the world, concluded a breakthrough season by clinching the U.S. Open title in September and has had a strong lead-up to the first Grand Slam of the year, defending her title at the Auckland warm-up event last weekend.

Gauff shared her perspective: “Some players’ goal is to win a Grand Slam. Once they reach that, it’s kind of, what’s next? For me, I always knew I wanted to win multiple. It was kind of easy to put her U.S. Open win in the past.”

She clarified, “Not ‘forget,’ I think that’s the wrong word. Put it in the past and look forward to the future instead of dwelling on the past.

Coco Gauff, reflecting on her U.S. Open triumph, draws inspiration from the realization that she can compete head-to-head with the best and emerge victorious. In the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium, she staged a comeback against the second-seeded Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, securing a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win.

“For me, the only thing I aim to remember from that Slam is the manner in which I won,” Gauff emphasized.

She continued, “It wasn’t my best tennis; it was more about the mental fortitude. I believe that confidence will carry me into the Australian Open this year and likely into more Slams throughout the season.”

Addressing technical aspects, Gauff mentioned refining her service motion to enhance the consistency of her toss.

“Sometimes I still have to remind myself of it. I was quite receptive to the adjustments,” she noted.

“I consider my serve a significant weapon that, when it’s on, can be a game-changer and get me out of tough situations. The primary goal was to make it more consistent.”
