Young Colombian Star Puerta Eyes National Team Spot on Back of Bayer Leverkusen Success
Colombian midfielder Gustavo Puerta is on a dream run. The 20-year-old’s first season with German giants Bayer Leverkusen has been nothing short of spectacular, and he hopes his experience with the undefeated Bundesliga champions will translate into a coveted spot on Colombia’s Copa America squad this summer.
Puerta has already made eight appearances for Leverkusen this season, contributing to their remarkable streak of 46 unbeaten matches in all competitions under manager Xabi Alonso. The young midfielder finds himself rubbing shoulders with European elite as Leverkusen prepares to face AS Roma in the Europa League semi-finals and awaits their fate in the German Cup final.
“This year has been amazing for me and my career,” Puerta told Reuters. “Hopefully, I can keep winning titles and get some playing time at the end of the tournament.”
Puerta’s talent wasn’t lost on the Colombian national team selectors. After success with Colombia’s under-20 side, he received his first call-up for the senior team’s friendlies against Spain and Romania in March. Now, with the Copa America approaching in June and July, he sets his sights on impressing coach Nestor Lorenzo.

“Being part of this undefeated team at Leverkusen is huge for my national team aspirations,” Puerta said. “If coach Lorenzo thinks I can contribute, I hope to be considered. We haven’t discussed it much, but he mentioned keeping an eye on me and wanting to see me play. Getting some minutes would be a privilege, and I’m eagerly waiting for a call-up.”
Playing for a top-tier club like Leverkusen has demonstrably boosted Puerta’s confidence and overall game. “It accelerates your development,” he explained. “Training daily with world-class players makes a big difference. Their experience is invaluable for a young player like me.”
Puerta feels supported by the club and believes he can flourish under Alonso’s guidance. “Winning the Bundesliga title was historic, incredible, and truly wild,” he said, reflecting on his first major trophy in a top European league. “I’m grateful for the support from the club, and I know I can reach my full potential here under coach Alonso.”
