Red Bull Should Keep Sergio Perez, Says Former Boss

Otmar Szafnauer, Sergio Perez’s former team principal, believes Red Bull should retain the Mexican driver for next season alongside Max Verstappen.

Perez’s current contract expires at the end of 2024, putting his future with the championship-leading team in question.

Szafnauer, who previously led Force India, Aston Martin, and Alpine, stated his preference for Perez during a recent Formula One event. “Knowing Checo well,” he said, “I’d keep Checo. If I were Christian [Horner], I’d definitely keep him next year.”

While acknowledging some off-weekend performances, Szafnauer praised Perez’s overall consistency. Currently second in the standings with three podium finishes, Perez returns to Miami this weekend, where he secured pole position last year.

Verstappen remains the clear leader, dominating the 2023 season with 19 victories. Szafnauer acknowledged Verstappen’s superiority but highlighted Perez’s racecraft as a valuable asset.

“He’s not the best qualifier,” Szafnauer admitted, “but his racecraft is exceptional.” He commended Perez’s ability to overtake strategically and manage tires effectively, a skill that outweighed his qualifying shortcomings.

With Hulkenberg confirmed for Sauber in 2025 and Audi in 2026, the focus shifts to the experience of veteran drivers on the grid. Lewis Hamilton will be 40 at Ferrari next year, while Fernando Alonso remains competitive at 42 with Aston Martin.
