Mets Stage Late Rally to Split Doubleheader with Tigers

In a thrilling second game of the doubleheader, Pete Alonso ignited the New York Mets’ comeback with a game-tying homer in the ninth inning, followed by Tyrone Taylor’s walk-off RBI single, securing a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Facing a one-hitter by a trio of Detroit pitchers, Alonso’s heroics in the ninth inning off Alex Faedo’s pitch breathed new life into the Mets. Brett Baty’s patient six-pitch walk and Starling Marte’s well-executed bunt set the stage for Taylor’s decisive single to left field, driving in the winning run and sealing the Mets’ first win of the season.

Reed Garrett delivered a stellar performance in relief, pitching three scoreless innings and allowing just two hits to earn the win for the Mets. Starter Jose Butto showcased his prowess on the mound, surrendering only one run on three hits and three walks while striking out six batters over six solid innings.

The victory was a crucial one for the Mets, preventing them from opening the season with a 0-6 record, a feat they haven’t experienced since 1963. On the other hand, the Tigers aimed to maintain their perfect start to the season, but fell short in their quest to open 6-0 for the first time since 2015.

In the earlier contest of the doubleheader, the Tigers mounted an impressive comeback, erasing a three-run deficit to defeat the Mets 6-3 in 11 innings. Gio Urshela led the offensive charge for Detroit with three hits, including a clutch two-run single in the decisive 11th inning.

Despite falling short in the opener, the Mets received strong contributions from Francisco Alvarez and Brett Baty, who both delivered RBI hits to help build an early lead. However, the Tigers rallied late, with Colt Keith’s run-scoring double and Riley Greene’s game-tying homer propelling them to victory.

Lugo’s impressive performance included allowing just one run on eight hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings, supported by a potent Royals offense that exploded for an eight-run seventh inning. Kyle Isbel’s two-run single and Braden Shewmake’s three-run error highlighted the Royals’ offensive onslaught, capped off by Melendez’s two-run homer, marking their biggest inning of the season.
