Luke Shaw Gears Up for Euro 2024 Amidst Recovery Concerns

As England prepares for Euro 2024, defender Luke Shaw, despite his ongoing recovery from a knee injury, has resumed light training. At 28, Shaw’s inclusion in the squad by coach Gareth Southgate has been seen as a calculated risk given his current fitness level.
During England’s recent practice sessions, Shaw was observed moving cautiously, indicative of a player still finding his rhythm post-injury. His participation in full matches remains uncertain, and the team’s medical staff are closely monitoring his progress. To prevent unnecessary strain, Shaw wore a specially designed bib during training to avoid contact, emphasizing the protective measures taken to ensure his availability for the tournament.

England’s manager, Gareth Southgate, acknowledges the gamble in selecting Shaw. “It’s a risk we’ve assessed and accepted,” Southgate commented. “Luke has shown significant improvement, and we believe he could be ready for our second group match, provided his recovery continues at this pace.”
Notably, Shaw is the only natural left-back in the 26-man squad. However, Kieran Trippier could also adapt to this role, having previously succeeded in similar positions. This provides Southgate with additional flexibility on the left flank.
England continues intense preparations for their upcoming opener against Serbia on June 17, 2022, at 2:00 AM. The focus is not just on strategy but also ensuring key players like Shaw are match-fit and ready to contribute.
